Door of Hope is a Christian Project and we seek to actively engage with issues of physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. We are committed to speaking out for those who are trapped by poverty, socially excluded, discriminated against and exploited.
We believe that everyone is worthy of justice and respect, and we are convinced that no person or situation is completely hopeless.
The Door of Hope currently has two full-time members of staff, one Project Manager and one Project Worker. Our work is made possible by the support from a team of committed volunteers. Our work focuses on two main areas, Evening Outreach and Daytime Support.
Evening Outreach: Teams of staff and volunteers carry out our evening outreach work on two evenings per week (from 8.00pm - 2.00am). We carry out outreach sessions on foot and meet the women on the streets, providing them with condoms, hot drinks and snacks. We also carry information about local services and are able to offer informal advice and a friendly face to chat to on the streets. In 2007, the Door of Hope met 508 contacts on the street outreach. On an average evening, we meet around 8 women on street outreach, many of these women are now familiar faces, and see us as positive and consistent presence on the streets.
Daytime Support: We offer the women we meet a flexible daytime support service tailored to their individual needs. The help we offer includes support and advice with housing, assistance in accessing drug/alcohol services and support in attending appointments. In 2007, we supported 194 women through our daytime support service. We are also partners in the SAFE Exit Court Diversion Scheme, a voluntary scheme for women arrested for loitering or soliciting. We take referrals from the Court Diversion Scheme and these appointments also form part of our daytime support service.
